First off, let me just say...my cousin (my "pal" all through my childhood) is the best. She teaches English as a second (or subsequent) language to college students, and has gone abroad to do the same in the past. She also has a massage chair, and magic fingers.
See, I decided to prove to my kids that I could still do a standing backbend back walkover. I totally can, by the way...but when I did an inverted roll after the backbend, I think I made a poor choice. It happens. BUT, I can still do it. So there!
Anyway, I tweaked something in my back, which normally wouldn't bother me except B is part monkey lately, and always wanting to jump/climb/hang on me. I'm appreciative; it's much better than the alternative, but it's not exactly pleasant.
That's where my cousin comes in. I went over to her house (we're practically neighbors...almost) and she worked on my back for the longest time. It. Was. Delightful. And it helped...until I did my nightly workout. I had to modify it. And that sucks.
I maintain that my injury has nothing to do with getting old, but instead, has everything to do with inappropriate space in which to complete my tricks. Let's go with that, okay? Thanks.
After the boys went to bed tonight, I looked up wedding stuff for a little while (read: I got on that horrid habit-forming Pinterest and stalked anyone I knew who had a wedding recently or has one in the near/not so near future. And then I sent a picture-loaded email while sending her a message on Facebook and text messaging back and forth. I'm so helpful! I did, however, find this:
And she loved it! So all was not lost (or mostly annoying) after all!
In an attempt to continue my workout streak, I modified some of the things I usually do, so I don't lose any ground. Afterwards, I decided a nice soak in a hot bath would be delightful, and I was right! It was wonderful until I climbed into bed. I pulled up my duvet cover (another great story), and promptly knocked over my cup full of icy cold water. It exploded on my phone charger and when I picked it up, the styrofoam had busted out of the bottom. With every step to the bathroom, I was doused with the remaining water in the cup: my thigh, my knee, my shin, my little piggies...all got a nice wake-up call. Exactly what you want before you go to sleep. Super!
My duvet cover: I decided to wash it today after B spilled something that never should have been in my room. Washing it? Not a problem. Putting my comforter back in its "envelope" was problematic. I've done it before, but it seems like, no matter which way I put the comforter back inside, it was the wrong way. At one point, I was wearing my duvet cover, trying to figure out where the corner was; the corner that subsequently grabbed hold of my head and made me really stuck. All the while, B's laughing hysterically from the couch. Finally, I got out the tape measure to determine which way would be the right way, and was pretty pleased with myself.
I had entirely way too many "moments" today. They can be good, even great, breaks from the daily grind, from the reality that we take life entirely too seriously. But today? Today, I felt like I didn't have a brain that was fully connected, and I dislike that feeling. I'm so thrilled that the boys start school tomorrow, but I'm kind of not so thrilled that I have to wait another few weeks. I'm grateful for the time, but I feel like my brain needs to get back into the swing of things.
Someone remind me of that when I complain about how my brain is entirely too busy and I never have any time...
Just like Jessie Spano and all those caffeine pills in the greatest episode of "Saved By The Bell" EVER.

If all three of us survive the next 33.5 hours, it'll be a miracle.
Seriously, the last 10 hours of my life have been some of the most stressful and exhausting hours of my life. I'll hit the high points briefly, and then close the door. It isn't pretty. Since 11:00 this morning, we have:
- Fought constantly
- Yelled loudly
- Cried
- Accused others of cheating
- Cried over a video game (times six)
- Invaded personal space
- Used unkind hands
- Used unkind words
- Drove this mom completely CRAZY.
And all of this was accomplished before 5:00 p.m. where I finally quit and made them sit next to each other on two stools and hold hands. One cried, one laughed, and I took a picture to use for later punishment if necessary.
And know what? It worked. Well, it halfway worked. They were mortified and embarrassed, and while they did sit there, they didn't sit quietly, so each time one of them said something, the time started over. Each time one tried to halfway hold hands, time started over. I gave them the choice: continue holding hands or get spanked for each "crime" committed. So, they sat...because if you were given the choice, which would you choose? Come on now.
After their punishment was over (and the inside of my cheek hurt from biting it so I wouldn't laugh), they had to take showers and get ready for bed. Needless to say, when N's dad called to see if he wanted to come over, N jumped at the chance. Wouldn't you?
They're both fine on their own...and for some of the afternoon, they were loud, but getting along really well. It's just, when it goes downhill, it's like a stinkin' freight train without brakes. On fast forward.
So, now, it's just one kid, and it seems like I handle that scenario the best. I'm able to browse several sites for ideas and strokes of genius for one of my closest friends' wedding in June. She called me today to ask me to be her Maid of Honor, and I was super surprised...and completely honored to be asked. I'm so excited to be a part of this wedding that's (already) shaping up to be something that fits her down to the last little detail.
As it should, being her day and all...but what would I know? I can't wait to see what she comes up with next: dress shopping, and giving me ideas of what she wants me to wear, and a toast! I get to get up and talk about her ON PURPOSE! Who wouldn't love to do that...I mean, aside from those who are terrified of any kind of public speaking.
Lucky for me, I'm not one of them! (Or maybe "unlucky" for Amy...I promised her I'd be mostly good, though.)
I've already been throwing ideas around in my head, but (knowing me) I'll have this heartfelt speech prepared, and decide to wing it. I'm a "fly by the seat of my pants" kinda girl, after all.
Nobody ever would've guessed that one, right?

ZINGO!
Well, well, well...Johnny Football sure has had a banner year. The roads are probably clogged with crying Sooner fans, trying to make their way up 35 so they can find solace in their homeland.
Norman: I lived there for 4 years when I was in elementary school. It doesn't mean I have to claim it.
B and I went to hang out with two of the cutest kids ever because their parents (Aggie Alumni) scored tickets to the Cotton Bowl! They were both so excited, and then (to add to their excitement) they ended up watching the game in a suite instead of being in the stands with the "commoners." I'm so glad they were able to go, and that B and I were able to hang out with their kiddos.
We colored, (sort of) watched "Finding Nemo," and I made queso. Why? Because you can't watch football without queso. I think it's a law. The kiddos had a hodge podge of dinner items, and I spent (literally) 20 minutes trying to get a tiny piece of apple skin out of the tiny space between two 4 year-old teeth.
It's pretty awesome when you and a 4 year-old congratulate each other on having good teamwork skills when the piece of apple finally comes out. Funny...she didn't really want anymore of her apple after that.
But you know what solves the trauma of getting a piece of fruit stuck between your teeth? Cookie dough ice cream. No, really. It's true.
After dinner, three of us put on our jammies (one was already a step ahead of the rest) and B got wrapped up in a game of Princess Yahtzee while I played "Uno Moo" with a sweet little 2 year-old. We made up our own rules, and wouldn't you know it? He won every single time. He got so excited, shrieking, "I the winner!"
Priceless. Then came Zingo! He and I played a couple of rounds, until the other two figured out what we were playing. What happened next was nothing short of hilarious. Picture children (2, 4, & 7) and myself playing a form of Bingo where two pictures pop up and you have to grab them first if you have the pictures on your Zingo card.
B is entirely too competitive, and I was playing my card and my little buddy's card to help him along. And each time he got a match, he giggled and said, "I the winner!" or "Dadgum it!" when someone beat him to it.
I was laughing so hard on the inside. We read stories, brushed teeth, and B was so kind as to let him try his little sea turtle dream light thingy that he got for Christmas.
When I put him to bed and closed his door, I didn't hear a peep for the rest of the night. In the meantime, B was on the couch, keeping me updated on the score. (For the record, it was almost halftime...and OU still sucks) I should pause here to remind y'all that I am NOT a TAMU fan, but since both teams can't lose, I went with the Texas team complete with new Freshman Heisman winner in lieu of those dumb Okies.
I've been an Aggie supporter (I just can't use the word "fan") exactly twice in my life, and they were both this season: against Alabama and tonight. I am, however, thrilled that Texas Tech has secured Kliff Kingsbury to lead the Red Raiders next year. He's very nice to look at, I mean he seems to have a good coaching head on his shoulders.
Funny sidenote: If you type "Kliff Kingsbury" into Google, the first three suggestions that pop us as you type are the following:
Kliff Kingsbury married
Kliff Kingsbury wife
Kliff Kingsbury girlfriend
It makes me laugh, and almost makes me want to click on them...almost.
Enjoy your win, Aggies, and your inflated fan base. It'll go back to normal tomorrow.

You can be a winner at the game of LIFE...that is, if you can survive the round.
Today the sun was actually out when the boys and I woke up, so I couldn't use the excuse that it was too dark and cold to go outside. Curses. It was still pretty chilly for the majority of the day, though, so when I finally (FINALLY) let B go outside to try his roller blades, we only stayed out there for about 20 minutes.
My child is a spaz, and I say that with the utmost love and affection. He has almost contemplated mastering going downhill, you know, excluding being able to stop. He has completely mastered going uphill, as long as he crawls on his hands and knees, which kind of negates the whole using the roller blades thing.
It was incredibly amusing to watch, and one of the maintenance men at my apartment complex got a good laugh or two...granted, that was watching me carry B (piggyback) up and down the stairs so he wouldn't die. Could you imagine? I could. That's why I sucked it up and carried him.
My dad got the boys this U Draw tablet thingy for the Xbox, and it's SO fun! B and I were thoroughly entertained for hours this afternoon, painting by number and doing tilt mazes. If you have an Xbox and you have kiddos, it's definitely worth it. In fact, I might play it before I go to bed, once I know they won't catch me...
In 30 minutes, I created a dinner that was perfect for a cold(ish) winter day, with leftovers for days to come...or at least to freeze for later use. Just call me "Rachael Ray," I tell you. What did I make, you ask? Chili and cornbread. I remember, as a kid, eating this chili at my grandparents' house on my dad's side of the family. My grandmother raised 5 kids AND ran a nursery school, so she knew all about making food that would feed large numbers and be filling. When you think of making chili, you think it takes forever...or at least I do.
This chili? 7 ingredients. I don't even measure 'em. I just dump stuff in...
1lb hamburger, browned with an onion (or without if you don't like onions)
2 small cans tomato sauce (or 1 regular can) with equal amounts of water
2 cans pinto beans (not drained)
1 can refried beans (yeah, I know it seems weird, but it totally thickens it up without being too tomato-ish)
Chili Powder (whatever amount you want)
Cumin (same thing applies)
You brown the meat, and then add the rest of the stuff and heat it up to boiling or stick it in a crockpot. You can add heat by adding rotel or hot sauce or jalapeno or whatever you want. It's super easy, and super good.
All that? Takes about 15 minutes...20 if the meat isn't ready to be browned.
Then the cornbread is super easy too...
1 1/2 c cornmeal
1/2 c flour
1 1/2 c buttermilk (I use milk with a TBSP of apple cider vinegar to make sour milk)
1/4 c oil
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
Mix it all together and dump it in a square pan (greased sides and bottom) and bake at 400(ish) for 25 minutes or so, and you're golden. Ha...golden. I crack myself up.
And there you have it, folks... Garnish the chili with cheese, fritos, onion, sour cream, or whatever else you can think of, and your whole family will eat it. I know this because B refuses to eat anything that isn't chicken nuggets or bean & cheese nachos. He looked at it and immediately said, "No." but then he tasted one bite and his eyes got all big and he said, "It tastes like a bean and cheese!" and scarfed it up. N ate 2+ bowls of the stuff. In fact, he had finished one bowl by the time I got to the table. Of course, he's also a human garbage disposal at this particular moment.
After dinner, (P.S. My mom came over for dinner) the 4 of us played LIFE. I think it was dubbed "LIFE" because you feel like you're wasted the majority of yours by the time it's over. N is "of age" to play, but B is still a little too young, and playing with both of them made me want to yank my hair out, move to another country, or at the very least, spend a significant amount of time in the fetal position.
Instead, I got to be the banker. Headslap. It took 2 hours to play one game, and B won with a little over 2.3 million. It just goes to show you that you, too, can be a millionaire if you're a veterinarian and live in a mobile home for your entire life.
I'm sure there were other interesting things that happened today, but I smell something burning, and I'm pretty sure it's my brain.

Just call me Andie MacDowell
Imagine my delight when yesterday morning was repeated...almost down to the minute. The only difference between my life and "Groundhog Day" is that I didn't wake up to Sonny & Cher blaring from my clock radio on my nightstand. Why? I don't have a clock radio on my nightstand. I have a bottle of water, a lamp, and B's report card on top of a stack of books I haven't read since I found the charger to my Kindle. But, I digress.
Wake-up time? 11:17 a.m. I might've heard the "Hallelujah Chorus" when B's little face climbed up on my pillows to say hello.
Our day consisted of being social recluses once again, although today, I did open the apartment door. Granted, it was only because the UPS man delivered my k cups, but hey...it's more than I opened it yesterday.
We watched Scooby Doo this morning; a throwback to when the boys were younger and our lives revolved around those meddling kids and their beloved pet. And, much to our surprise, one of our favorite Scooby movies came on directly after. "Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase" also known as "The VIRUS" by my boys, which (let's be honest) is hilarious to hear them yell, came on, and we haven't seen it in years.
B and I played Headbanz, they played Xbox, I took a shower. All of this is truly exciting news, I know. We watched movies, ate dinner, and stayed inside.
B wanted to try out his new roller blades, but I refused to go outside. If the temperature isn't going over 40, I'm staying in my jammies and hanging out under a blanket with my kindle and a cup of warm goodness.
And that's what I did...except when I took a shower. N was complaining about having too many lazy days in a row. I didn't realize there could be such a thing. We haven't left the apartment since Monday, and I don't necessarily plan to leave tomorrow.
Then again, I might branch out and go check the mail. I know, watch out!
It's really hard to come up with exciting information when you're as boring as I am.

Shortest. Day. Ever.
The best thing about your children staying up until midnight or later on NYE? When they sleep until after 11:30 the next morning.
It happened, and I'm kind of hoping that today becomes my own personal "Groundhog Day" and it repeats over and over and over again. I not only got to sleep until my alarm went off, but I got to sleep PAST it! What a way to start the year...
It's made for a really short day, though, and I will say B and I have stayed in or pjs all day long. I have absolutely no desire to change until tomorrow. Maybe. N did put on clothes, thinking he was going to go shoot hoops at his dad's house. Instead, he settled for NBA on his Playstation.
I know. I'm hitting "Mom of the Year" pretty hard already. It's cool. I'll be out of the running soon enough.
I'm really excited that my order of K cups will be delivered tomorrow. I realize that's not a whole lot to be excited about, but it's a surprise variety pack. I can't wait to see what's in it!
Yes, this is a new low...but I'm starting my year with lowered expectations so I will (hopefully) exceed said expectations and feel like I've made progress.
2013: The year my mind tricks MIGHT work on myself.
Other than that, there isn't a whole lot to report. We watched "Gnomeo & Juliet" this morning. B was excited to watch it, but N claimed to be less than thrilled. Funny how he didn't want to watch it, and sat completely engrossed for the duration of the movie. But, remember...he can't stand that movie.
We played some sudden death Toy Story Connect 4, and I had N trapped 4 different ways. I was pretty proud of myself for outsmarting a 10 year-old. It was even more entertaining watching the boys play while I worked on the stinkin' Christmas puzzle that's been covering my coffee table for weeks.
I finally finished it by the way, you know, except for the ONE piece of the new puzzle that walked away all on its own. Don't you just love it when that happens? I have one more to do before the holiday season is over, but I'm not sure if I want to go down that road.
Oh! I decided to make certain parts of my body love (read: hate) me, so I'm doing this challenge to (ideally) get me ready for the LLS Firefighter Stair Climb towards the end of the month. Sorry, I got a little sidetracked when I typed "firefighter" as I thought of all of the unique and creative possibilities that would NEVER happen in real life...unless you're me. But, I digress, and I might've started drooling. Or maybe I just can't drink water without being a total spaz. I've only been doing it for a few days, but my thighs aren't happy with me at the moment. On the upside, they're going to be epic by the time I'm finished.
I hope.
Happy New Year, everyone!

It's last day of 2012...
and OU still sucks. Hahahaha, that never gets old. At dinner the other night, my sister and I were discussing the upcoming Cotton Bowl, and how it was so hard to choose who to cheer for because both teams are considered the enemy. In fact, her husband has asked her (possibly on more than one occasion) if it's possible for both teams to lose. Sadly, this is not possible, but wouldn't it be great?!
I think my sister and I are in agreement that cheering for A&M is the lesser of two evils. Two reasons: Johnny Football and his Heisman, and it's a Texas team. As several of my Aggie friends know, it was hard enough cheering Johnny Manziel on for the Heisman...to actually hope they win a bowl game? Unheard of. I must admit though, it was kind of awesome to see them beat the crap out of 'Bama.
I think I threw up a little when I typed that.
The boys and I absolutely had to go to the grocery store today, and I (tried) to bribe them into behaving by promising to hook up their Xbox when we got home if they behaved. Five chances and a bunch of tears later, B pretty much sealed the deal on not being able to play...possibly ever, and N still had a slim chance. I don't know what it is about going to a store, any store, and acting like a total fool. While they're both coming off of a week at dad's, and deprogramming takes time, I was over it by 3:00 this afternoon.
But the fun? Well, it just kept coming. After we got home, and I told B he was going to have to take a nap if he didn't stop and actually SENT him to take a nap, my mom came over to hang out for a little while. I gave B the option of helping me make banana bread in lieu of taking a nap, and he jumped at the chance...all the while complaining that it wasn't fair that N was able to play Xbox.
Newsflash: Life isn't fair, buddy. B just had all kinds of problems today, and then N started in, too. I won't go into detail, mostly because it will just piss me off (again), but to say I considered what life would be like if I had done things differently, would be putting it mildly.
To those of you who called me this afternoon/evening and I ignored your calls/texts, it was for the best. I promise. The boys were permitted to stay up until midnight, but at least one of them was on last warning. I bet you can't guess who!
I don't know what his deal is...no, actually, I do. But it's not realistic, nor is it fair to unreasonable thoughts in a child's head. To attempt to manipulate a child into making a different choice isn't right or fair to the child. And honestly, it doesn't do any damage to anyone but the child in question.
People are so stupid sometimes. Seriously. I just don't get it.
Here's hoping that 2013 will be better than 2012, which was better than 2011, which was better than 2010, which was a jillion times better than the six years before that.
Can I get an "Amen" on that?
